While walking around the ‘Women In Revolt’ exhibition, I was struck by frustration. The frustration was directed at no one in particular, but society— and how so many hard-fought feminist movements have fallen into obscurity and been replaced by individualism.
The Tate Britain exhibition looks at radical British feminist movements of the 1970s and 1980s. Whilst these movements were all about identity (from Lesbian to Punk), they were not individualistic. These feminist movements of the 70s and 80s used to have real community, and so much of that community has been killed. By what? Capitalism; the internet; the diluting of feminism into something to personally acquire rather than socially achieve; all of the above?
